She was a teacher and an activist who devoted her life to ensure that African Americans had the right to an education and to be free from discrimination. She worked with presidents Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin Roosevelt on child welfare, housing, employment and education. She also served on President Truman's Committee of Twelve for National Defense.
