Since 1677, the Bruton Parish Church has been visited by such well-known Americans as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. In the early years the sexes sat apart. A vestrybook entry for January 9, 1716, says: "Ordered that the Men sit on the North side of the church, and the women on the left."
